Group exhibition

Curated by Joachim Naudts & Zuzanna Rachowska

Participating artists Meryem Bayram, Maëlle Dufour, Melissa Gordon, Imge Özbilge

Under the banner of ‘Periphery’, Kunsthal Extra City has been commissioning site-specific artworks for its current location in the former Dominican monastery. Through this long-term project, artists are invited to question, activate and explore Extra City’s location, which is far from neutral in terms of its associations.

Each artist installs a semi-permanent work in peripheral areas of the church and chapel, engaging in a critical dialogue with the architectural space and its many associations. The site-specific artworks are given a place in side aisles, forgotten back rooms, hidden interstitial spaces or on the balcony – places where the works can blossom in complete seclusion. In this way, peripheral spaces are reevaluated and made accessible to the public.

The selected artists work in various disciplines, from animation to painting, performance to installation art. Every so often, a new work is added and another removed.

‘Periphery’ was first launched in 2021 with works by:

In 2024, new work will be added by:

  • Melissa Gordon (from 27.01.24)
  • Clara Spilliaert (vanaf 10.05.'24)
  • Hussein Shikha (vanaf 10.05.'24)

‘Periphery’ is a project external to Kunsthal Extra City’s regular operations. As such, we’re always looking for sponsors so that we can enable the creation of new work by artists in the future. If interested, please contact [email protected].
