What is the significance of family today? Once viewed as the cornerstone of society and vital to our identity, the concept of family increasingly becomes a product of our own imagination. In the city we rely on ourselves and on the spontaneous connections we establish with others. In this regard we are children of our time, pioneers. Now it’s up to us to decide who we count as our family and how we shape these new connections, temporary or long-lasting as they may be.

‘Family fictions’ brings the notion of family into the exhibition space in order to study its meaning, which continues to change under the influence of shifting cultural, social, political and economic structures. Does the term “family” still suffice to describe contemporary forms of relationships in all their complexity and dynamism?
