Within the framework of The Residence (reading room), Extra City organizes a lecture series together with the artists Ronny Heiremans and Katleen Vermeir.
This time we invite Cuauhtémoc Medina, artistic director of Manifesta 9.
He will address part II of Faust (1832), the play in which Goethe confronts the promises and pitfalls of the Industrial Revolution and the economic growth it generated.
The themes of Faust, and especially those that play out in the second part, are still relevant today in the context of our societies that are confronted with one of the worst post-war economic crises. The text's contemporaneity in terms of the economy is outstanding, as it focuses on the concept of eternal growth. In that respect the play almost foreshadows modernity, and our society and its crises.
Offers We Cannot Refuse - a screening programme compiled by Mihnea Mircan
At the beginning of the evening, a film programme compiled by Mihnea Mircan, artistic director of Extra City, will be screen. Mircan responds with this screening to Ronny Heiremans and Katleen Vermeir's foray into the financial unconscious with a selection of videos that explore the transactions between different regimes of value.
