Opening New Lovin (David Bernstein) & Myopic View (Melissa Gordon)

26.01.2024, 18:00 — 00:00 Opening

Kunsthal Extra City kicks off 2024 with a double opening during the first BORGER Nocturne of the year! On Friday, 26 January, we will launch the performance exhibition 'New Lovin' by David Bernstein and unveil a new work by Melissa Gordon in the project 'Periphery'. We cordially invite you to come and discover the works of both artists from 6 pm. We will close the evening with a DJ set by Thomas whose style is characterised by "deep feelings and occasional disco dwellings".

New Lovin: a performance exhibition by David Bernstein

New Lovin’ is David Bernstein's first performative exhibition at an arts institution in Belgium, curated by Dagmar Dirkx. It brings together three narratives, the common thread being the human desires for dominance and submission. Using objects such as a blindfold, pieces of watermelon and a pizza, the artist explores how power relations are symbolised.

Over more than 30 planned performances, Bernstein will activate and reveal the exhibited objects, thus emphasising the importance of physical presence, ritual and storytelling. To find out what 'New Lovin' is all about, we recommend to reserve a spot for one of the performances. On the occasion of the opening, the artist will perform 4 times (at 6 pm, 7 pm, 8 pm and 9 pm). The performances are in English and last about 30 minutes. Places are limited to 10 people per slot, so book your spot well in advance.

Myopic View: a new artwork by Melissa Gordon in 'Periphery'

'Periphery' is welcoming a new work in its collection! The semi-permanent exhibition of site-specific artworks expands from Friday 26 January with Myopic View (2024). The installation by internationally renowned artist Melissa Gordon will be displayed in a space in the church that was previously not accessible to the public. It is the first new work to be added to the collection since the project began in 2021.

Friday evening's unveiling of Myopic View will also be celebrated with the launch of Gordon's book Vital Signs (2023) at 8:30 pm. The monographic retrospective publication brings together writings by the artist on the role and behaviour of gestures in her painting practice. During the presentation, Gordon will read a passage and engage in conversation with curator Zuzanna Rachowska.
