Kunsthal Extra City – on the former site of Wasserij Goossens – is participating for the first time in the Open Monuments Day.
In 2013 Kunsthal Extra City moved to its current location in Antwerp-Berchem, in the building previously occupied by Goossens laundrette. The laundrette was a neighbourhood landmark for over 75 years. The complex stretched from Ferdinand Coosemansstraat to Eikelstraat, and encompassed, among other things, a self-service laundrette, a dry-cleaning service, a ‘cleaning supermarket’ and an ironing service. In 2011, Wasserij Goossens closed its doors, but, with the coming of Kunsthal Extra City, the building has been given a new lease of life, with exhibition spaces, artists’ studios, a small cinema and a café.
Free guided tours
During Open Monuments Day you can follow a guided tour in the building and in the current exhibition ‘Extra Citizen’, at 14:00 and at 16:00.
Young Citizens Program
While the parents follow a tour or visit the exhibition independently, children from 5 till 12 years old can participate in the Young Citizens Program.
How does the city become your own? At what point can you say ‘I feel at home here’? Under guidance of an experienced moderator, you’ll discover a number of artworks in the exhibition that connect with your life and experiences. Through a number of stimulating hands-on activities, you’ll explore your ‘young citizenship’ and your relationship to the city of Antwerp. Through playful activities you will engage with the themes of the exhibition.
Participation is free of charge, but registration is needed
