Extra City invited writer André Rottmann to produce a text about the work of Falke Pisano. Rottmann presents his text during a lecture on Friday 29 October.
The lecture will discuss the work of Falke Pisano in terms of a continuous reflection of what ultimately constitutes an object of aesthetic experience that must remain resolutely deferred, if not structurally absent.
Two major concerns will structure the talk: on the one hand it will try to explore how Pisano’s practice sets out to reconsider central tenets of aesthetic modernism, especially the notion of abstraction as a universal language. On the other hand it will discuss the diagram as the decisive counter-trope of Pisano’s lecture performances, texts and installations, yet argue for its critical and transformative relation to models of pedagogy in the arts at large.
Against the art-historical backdrop of conceptualism’s recoding of the artwork as lingusitic proposition or speech act and with regard to the emphasis on virtuosic communication and aesthetic education in the postfordist world of immaterial labor, the lecture will thus attempt to shed a light on Pisano’s oeuvre as an ongoing negotation of the ever so transient contemporary „state of the art“.
