The ”academic turn” in higher art education, with its strong emphasis on research, sharpens the relation between art and knowledge. Art can be learned, but can it be taught? What exactly is at play in the knowledge transmission of art education? Even more, can knowledge be performed, and how does a performance transmit knowledge? And what happens on the side of the spectator or listener?
In this masterclass, you will look into the so-called lecture-performance as a relatively recent form of art, which has originated from performance art in the 1960s and is still gaining popularity today. This phenomenon will be illustrated not only with historical figures like Robert Morris, Dan Graham, Andrea Fraser, John Cage and Joseph Beuys, but also with more contemporary examples like Sharon Hayes, Rabih Mroué, William Kentridge, Hito Steyerl, Amalia Ulman, Walid Raad, Bruce High Quality Foundation, among many others. What is the dramaturgical elaboration of their performances? Which props are being used, and which roles are being acted out? This art historical overview of the past fifty years will clarify how artists share their research with the world, on the intersection of visual art, lecture and performance. Last but not least, you will be guided towards the public presentation of your own lecture-performance.
