Imagining Monuments with Julie Carlier, Saddie Choua, Katinka De Jonge and Els De Vos, among others

On female representation in the city of today

24.01.2019, 19:30 — 21:00 Discussion

Curated by Kunsthal Extra City and the Middelheim Museum

Through a series of public discussions and artistic suggestions, we will – as city residents, activists, academics, opinion-makers and artists – put our heads together to think about how we approach the various aspects of female representation in monuments in the public space.

The first evening focuses on the (historical) context by which the underrepresentation of women in the public space might be understood and the initiatives that seek to effect change in this area; with Julie Carlier, Saddie Choua, Katinka De Jonge, and Els De Vos, among others, moderated by RoSa vzw.

Julie Carlier teaches the History of Feminism as part of the interuniversity master’s degree Gender and Diversity, and Gender & Globalisation for the master’s degree Conflict & Development Studies. She coordinates the interdisciplinary Centre for Global Studies at the University of Ghent.

Saddie Choua is a visual artist, documentary filmmaker and writer. She focuses on the role of policy in the media and in society. In her work she shines a light on racial and ethnic discrimination and the discrimination of women.

Katinka De Jonge is a fine artist. For her artistic project ‘On the Shoulders of Giants’, she made 3D scans of statues and monuments in Antwerp in order to derive the ‘average’.

Els De Vos is a professor of architecture and spatial planning, and teaches at the University of Antwerp. Her research is focused on the overlap between architecture, gender studies, social history, anthropology and the public space.
