One day before the opening of the retrospective Chasing Shadows - Thirty Years of Photographic Essays, Cinema Zuid and Extra City Kunsthal, Antwerpen invite you to a converstation between a prestigious trio: Jean-François Chevrier, Santu Mofokeng and Ahlam Shibli will speak about the role of the (photographed) anecdote and the way it can re-write histories. After a successful start in Jeu de Paume, Paris, last year, this international coproduction will be on display at Extra City all summer.
Corinne Diserens, curator of the exhibition, will introduce the evening. After the conversation, the film Respite (2007) by Harun Farocki will be screened.
Respite - Harun Farocki (DE 2007 40' / English version)
The captured Rudolf Breslauer made in 1944 a documentary about the daily life in Westerbork, a Dutch transitcamp for Jews. The 16mm film had to show the role of the camp within the German war machinery. Farocki comments, by means of still subtitles in between the different takes and lays bare the complexity of the relationship between images, history and memory.
