The work of artist - musician Joris Van De Moortel (°1983) breaks the line between visual art and music. His mixed-media sculptures frequently arise from previous performances where he is more present as a guitarist/musician. As an artist, Van De Moortel is strongly influenced by the musique concrète, a form of experimental music where everyday sounds are converted to sound collages using different electronics.

His process-driven work includes sculptures, figurative drawings, paintings and assemblages of musical instruments, neon tubes and relics that remain after his -often intense- musical performances. When you combine these various works, it generates an unexpected sense of harmony. This way of working (giving a new purpose to an object) generates a sort of catharsis. With great precision and sophistication Van De Moortel exposes the permanent tension that exists between order and chaos.

Extra Academy

Extra Academy is the spontaneous alliance of Extra City Kunsthal Antwerpen and the two art schools of the city, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Sint-Lucas Antwerpen.
