Extra Academy #42: Marijn van Kreij

11.01.2017, 18:00 — 22:00 Lecture

In Marijn van Kreij’s multifaceted oeuvre, consisting of drawings and paintings on paper, collages, objects, videos and installations, the process of duplication plays a key role. In his work, Van Kreij finds a connection with historical work by artists from the past – the legacy of modernism in particular – as well as with music and visual culture in the broader sense. Reflecting on ideas around repetition and autonomy, his work often forms a direct and personal response to existing works of art or involves collaborations with other artists, designers, writers or musicians. In his recent series of ‘Picasso grids’ details from the late paintings of Picasso serve as a point of departure. For Extra Academy Marijn van Kreij will focus his talk on this series and related exhibitions and collaborations in Europe and Japan.

Marijn van Kreij (Middelrode, 1978) lives and works in Amsterdam. He studied at Grafisch Lyceum, Eindhoven from 1996–1999; at AKV St. Joost, Breda from 1999–2003 and worked as resident artist at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam in 2005 and 2006.

Recent solo exhibitions include: Reclining Nude with a Man Playing the Guitar, Hermitage, Amsterdam (with a contribution by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & The Cairo Gang), 2016; Nude in front of a Garden, KLEMM'S, Berlin (with a contribution by Andrea Büttner), 2016; Contingence for Beginners, Barbara Seiler, Zürich (with Nickel van Duijvenboden), 2016; Range Anxiety, andriesse eyck, Amsterdam, 2015 and How to Look Out, Museum De Hallen, Haarlem (with contributions by Sean Edwards, Andrea Fraser and JCJ Vanderheyden), 2011.
