Extra Academy is a spontaneous alliance of Extra City, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Sint-Lucas Antwerpen.
The guest speaker of 19 March is Edwin Deen.
During his lecture Edwin Deen will speak about his work as well as execute a couple of experiments of the performance series ‘physical experiments live’, because his work speaks for itself. ‘physical experiments live’ is a continuous performance series through which he explores and shows the ‘hidden nature’ of seemingly unnatural/artificial, human made things: https://vimeo.com/11303640.
Edwin Deen (NL 1980, based in Antwerp, BE) is interested in physical and cultural processes and the use of everyday objects and base materials. Through experiments and esthetic images he succeeds to emphasize what we usually neglect, in a nimble and attractive, nevertheless interesting way.
Deen graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam) in 2009 and became lector and mentor in the primary year since 2011. He won the ‘Art Olive Award 2009’ with his graduating work ‘Untitled’ (2008) and the work ‘Physical Nature - Natuurkundige Natuur’ (2009). In 2010 he received the ‘Crazy Curators Award’ for ‘flatland’, a series of small installations.
Edwin Deen showed his work in group and solo exhibitions in Europe, for example Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam [NL], Design Week Milan [IT], House of Arts Bratislava [SK], CCA Warsaw [PL,] Ausstellungsraum Klingental Basel [CH], Nida Art Colony [LT] and Mesdag Collection Den Haag [NL].
He was artist in residence in Badgast Den Haag [NL], Fundacja Atelier Warsaw [PL] and TAG Den Haag [NL].
