City Lab

We see our visitors as a rich and diverse collection of knowledge and experience. Since people make the city, Kunsthal Extra City wants to be the spot where people feel welcome, a place abuzz with meaningful contact between city dwellers and artists, laypersons and connoisseurs. Our home in Antwerp is a hub for (inter)national, intercultural, and interdisciplinary collaborations that through art contribute to the concept of a society in transition.

Kunsthal Extra City has its own small cinema with approximately 50 seats. Also on the premises is a versatile, multipurpose space where guest projects, talks and debates can be hosted, as well as workshops for schools, meetings of neighbourhood associations, etc.

Contact us for more information regarding the use of our multipurpose space.

Former site of Wasserij Goossens

In 2013 Kunsthal Extra City moved to its current location in Antwerp-Berchem, in the building previously occupied by Goossens laundrette. The industrial laundrette was a neighbourhood landmark for over 75 years. The complex stretched from Ferdinand Coosemansstraat to Eikelstraat, and encompassed, among other things, a self-service laundrette, a dry-cleaning service, a ‘cleaning supermarket’ and an ironing service. In 2011, Wasserij Goossens closed its doors, but, with the coming of Kunsthal Extra City, the building has been given a new lease of life, with exhibition spaces, artists’ studios, a small cinema and a café.
